Schnitzel in Vienna

Vienna, I love this city.  The best wiener schnitzel in Vienna?  That’s easy.  You go to ImmerVoll.  It’s about halfway down Weihburg Gasse, number 17.  You can either walk up from the Parkring, or you can come down from St. Stephansplatz.  If you are not careful, you’ll walk right by it.  There’s maybe a dozen tables in there, a few more, a few less.  If it’s summer time, you can walk about 20 metres past the place, down towards the Parkring, and they set up an outdoor seating gig in this little square. I can never remember the name of the square, something like Franzikanerplatz, due to a famous old Franciscan church on one corner, but on the other corner it’s got a really cool bar, called the Kleines Cafe, I think.  And it is tiny.  But cool.

Anyway, regardless of time of year, it’s impossible to get a reservation at the last minute, and the way I live my life, that’s about the extent of my planning skills: Drej = chaos (in terms of planning ahead. ) But this is the place I always want to go back to.  Since I moved out of there, it’s my favorite starting point for any visit to Vienna, and I always meet my friend Ingo here.  Ingo and I always forget the names of the people running the place, but they always make us feel welcome.  And I think they kind of recognize us from over the years, but these days I don’t get there as often as I used to when I lived there.

And it’s all about the local and traditional austrian food at Immervoll.  But I go for the schniztel 100% of the time. Regardless of what the menu says or offers, you go for the wiener schnitzel von kalb, and not von schwein.  Nothing wrong with pork schnitzel, but the veal is just too tender to pass up.  And because we’re in Vienna, you have to ask for the schnitzel mit Breiselbern.  Cranberry jelly.  And it’s a sweet cranberry.  (And coming from OceanSpray bogs of southeastern Massachusetts, I like cranberries.)

The schnitzel is pounded away in the kitchen, and dropped in the secret ImmerVoll coating, and twenty minutes later, it’s heaven.  Gives you enough time for about three larges glasses of Stiegl beer, and when it’s over, just enough room for a schnappes.

Six years of eating there. So much of the planning and creating of Project Endeavor was done in the corner of this place….

Well, that’s my first post.
